In order to prescribe and dispense controlled substances, a physician must apply and maintain a valid and active license issued by the Drug Enforcement Agency of the U.S. Department of Justice (DEA license). Maintenance of a DEA license, in many instances, is integral to the practice of medicine. Certain specialties, such as pathology, may be practiced without the necessity of a DEA license.
